Crossing Relations: Migrations and Possible Worlds features the work of seven contemporary artists who document personal and familial movements across the lands, waters, and skies of Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and regions of the United States. Through lithography, calado embroidery, ceramic sculpture, and other techniques, the artists invite us to notice and sense modes of relation made in migration and diasporic contexts between people, landscapes, animals, flora, and other entities. The exhibition’s title speaks both to the relations that people who are on the move encounter and form during crossings as well as to the ways that structures like citizenship and the nation-state violently cross and tear people, places, and connections apart. Crossing Relations depicts difficult and imaginative migratory routes and acts of connection that are oriented toward love, resistance, and memory. Together, Paola de la Calle, Juana Estrada Hernández, Victoria Martinez, Johana Moscoso, Kevin Quiles Bonilla, Chelsea Ramírez, and Juana Valdés ask us to bear witness to the capability of art and stories to remember and imagine a world beyond confinement.
