Editorial Guidelines

How are pitches selected?

The editorial staff and board meet biweekly to review submissions. Open calls are published bi-annually, in the spring and fall. Pitches are often solicited to ensure a range of perspectives within the field of Latinx Studies, with a strong emphasis on Latinx art and criticism.

Where do I send my pitch?

Please contact Intervenxions

by emailing Latinxproject@nyu.edu, Attn: Intervenxions.

Can I reprint Intervenxions?

Yes, we only ask for proper attribution and a link to the original article.

When will I hear back about my pitch?

Submissions can expect a response within 1-2 weeks, unless otherwise instructed. We will not respond to pitches that do not adhere to our guidelines.

Are contributors paid?

The Latinx Project offers modest honorarium for independent writers, graduate students, and freelance contributors. This includes faculty not currently in a tenured position. Our rates are as follows:

$300 for reviews (book, film, art exhibition, television, music, etc.), interviews, short essays (up to 1,500 words)

$400 for original essays (1,500 words or more), profile writing, and long-form content (over 3,000 words)

In certain cases, we can offer a modest stipend for photographers or other collaborators.

*We kindly ask that previous contributors wait at least one submission cycle, i.e. a semester, to submit another pitch. As a low-volume publication with limited resources, we would like to provide emerging writers and scholars opportunities to engage with our platform.

  • Intervenxions publishes reviews, criticism, reporting, interviews, and essays on topics related to Latinx art, politics, and culture between 1,500 to 4,000 words.

  • Currently, we do not publish fiction or poetry.

  • Pitches no longer than 250 words are accepted on a rolling basis, except for scheduled publishing breaks in the summer (June/July) and winter (December/January). Do not send pitches as an attachment; please include them in the body of your email.

  • We prefer not to receive completed drafts or manuscripts.

  • Please inquire about Spanish-language and bilingual submissions.

  • Please include a brief biography (200 words or less) and a target word count with your pitch. Do not send any attachments unless you are including materials related to your pitch.

  • For image requirements, see Squarespace guidelines on sizing and format. Please do not send images without verifying copyright restrictions and permissions.

  • Please hyperlink online sources whenever possible. For in-text citations and endnotes, please use Chicago Manual of Style.

  • For interviews, please have audio or transcript available upon request. *Please note: interview questions do not need to be submitted beforehand.

  • Drafts should prioritize clear and concise language, as well as strike a balance between a casual, yet informed tone.

  • The thesaurus is your friend. Avoid redundancy, such as the same redundant word or redundant phrase used twice in an already redundant sentence or paragraph.

  • For additional guidance on editorial content and the scope of the publication, we encourage you to review past contributions.

  • We do not italicize words in a foreign language unless for emphasis. Also, Spanglish is cool.

  • Please submit drafts as a Word document—bonus points if you use Google Docs. PDFs create extra work to convert them into another format and we edit collaboratively using shared Google Docs.

  • A kill fee equal to half the agreed upon honorarium will be issued for unpublished drafts.
