About the Work

This is a constructed scene, reimagining a family album photograph of my father holding a piñata line at a birthday party, set in the greater Los Angeles area where my family grew up.

About the Artist
Damon Casarez is a Los Angeles-based photographer whose practice is rooted in storytelling, introspection, and reminiscence. His staged and documentary-style projects explore how identity is reshaped and fragmented across generations. Drawing from his experience as a fourth-generation Mexican-American raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles County, Casarez reflects on his relationship to assimilation, disconnection, and belonging. Casarez earned his BFA from ArtCenter College of Design in 2012 and his MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University in 2025.

Casarez exhibited in Escenas in 2025 at The Latinx Project.
