About the Work 

This painting is a relief sculpture, capturing a moment in time. Burnside Ave is a very chaotic train stop on the 4 train. I used to live in this area and the families that live there despite the poverty and addiction make it a vibrant place. The crystals and colors show how community, people make a place magical.

About the Artist

Daisy Ruiz, better known online as @Draizys, is a Bronx-bred Illustrator, and writer. Her latest comic, Gordita: Built Like This taps into the nostalgia of the early 2000’s, capturing the fashion, music, and aura of that time. Ruiz uses illustrations to tell stories of nuanced moments of her upbringing in The Bronx, narrating experiences of body shaming in adolescence and the search for acceptance within white-dominated alternative interests.
