About the Work
This painting is about the transitional moments in life. Reflecting upon the seasons, during the start of Spring, when the flowers and leaves have not yet blossomed, but we can look forward to a future where they have.
About the Artist
Each painting begins with a specific person or memory in mind, which guides my material choices. These have included shredded car tires, pearl powder, plantain leaves, hibiscus, and other elements. I believe that materials themselves can hold memories and history, becoming vessels for what might otherwise remain unspoken. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Ruiz earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Humanistic Studies from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2020. She has exhibited at Galería SURCO, Bayamón, PR; Bad Bunny’s Residency, San Juan, PR; Deanna Evans Projects, New York, NY; Untitled Art Fair, Miami, FL; Bishop Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; NYU's Latinx Project, New York, NY; NY Culture Club, New York, NY; Tchotchke Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Selenas Mountain, Brooklyn, NY; Beverly’s NYC, New York, NY; Paradice Palase, Brooklyn, NY; Grimaldis Gallery, Baltimore, MD; and Current Space, Baltimore, MD. Ruiz was featured in Untitled Edit, Visionary Magazine, Cult Bytes, and New American Paintings, Issue 160.
Ruiz exhibited in Re-collections in 2023 at The Latinx Project.
