About the Work
Paradise is Burning extends my I Am From Where You Vacation collage series, where surreal Caribbean landscapes unsettle the postcard fantasy and insist on the region’s layered, local realities. Built from personal archives and digitally composed fragments, the work reframes “paradise” as a contested site—shaped by tourism’s gaze, but also by resistance, humanism, and the ongoing demand for liberation across our interconnected struggles.
About the Artist
Patricia Encarnación (she/they) is an Afro-Dominican interdisciplinary artist and scholar. Her work critically engages with colonial legacies across various socio-cultural layers within Afro-diasporic communities, focusing on the Caribbean, Latin America, and it’s diaspora. Through explorations of material culture, collective memory, and cultural identity, Encarnación challenges tropes of Caribbean and tropical aesthetics by recontextualizing everyday objects, landscapes, and aesthetics from her upbringing.
Encarnación is curating the upcoming Burning the Mask and exhibited in Afro-Syncretic in 2020 at The Latinx Project.
